He amazes me so much. With his infectious laughter and twinkling toes. A boy who rarely has a bad day. I spend every day admiring his ability to live freely. A pure joy to talk to. To cuddle with. To just be with. These are the days when life seems just right. When just a blink of time in his life, I am the lucky one. I get to witness him grow each day.<br />
<br />
Oh, to capture these moments. Tiny little details into who this child is. Such warmth, light and love!<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I started my home schooling program with my youngest today. He is just 3 1/2 and we are following a varied waldorf preschool curriculum. There have been many reasons for my want to home school him, but it really comes down to the beauty of getting to be engaged with him on such a wonderful level. For these little ones are only little once.<br />
<br />
Why did we choose Waldorf as our guide?<br />
<br />
My older son attends a Waldorf school and is in the first grade. Our family adopted a "waldorf-based" lifestyle about 6 years ago. This summer I spent a lot of time scouring through books and Pinterest to figure out the best way to bring a valuable form of education and "Schooling" to my son. A big part of our day is through following a rhythm. I like to keep things calm, organic, peaceful.<br />
<br />
We start our day with a two person circle ;-) We sing a morning song to greet the day. We thank dear mother Earth for the beauty that she bestows upon us. Then I will do a verse or two with hand gestures to engage our bodies.<br />
<br />
After our singing and verses we do yoga. We stretch to our toes, and to our nose. We find ways to exert energy in a positive way. Today after our stretching we acted like animals. At times we were cats, then bears, then fish... my son thought it was hilarious to watch me act like all these animals. It was so light and free at that moment.<br />
<br />
The next part of our day was story. Today we read three books (all waldorf in nature). We laid a blanket on to the floor and that's where we sat for story time. It was nice to take our time. He asked many questions and felt nice to know that we weren't rushed to finish. After the stories we worked together on folding the blanket. These are the things that develop my son's brain so much but may seem so little on a larger scale. The ability to learn life lessons, along with things such as ABCs and math, are equally important.<br />
<br />
My son's favorite thing is our washing basin. We added 3 drops of lavender to our jar and sang our hand washing song. He loved loved loved this.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://tinypic.com/?ref=2w7oh9f" target="_blank"><img alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic" border="0" src="http://i57.tinypic.com/2w7oh9f.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
After hand washing then it was time for snack. We had two tea cups and a carafe that were his size. He poured our water and then I served our strawberry muffins from yesterday. We sang a blessing and lit a candle to start our snack.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://tinypic.com/?ref=29espxy" target="_blank"><img alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic" border="0" src="http://i57.tinypic.com/29espxy.jpg" /></a></div>
The second part of our schooling was at our neighborhood pond where we ate our lunch. We also had a sewing craft. The night before I cut us both two pieces of felt and we worked on our sewing. I was teaching him blanket stitch, but it was more about learning not to poke himself with the needle, and paying attention to the task at hand. He was so proud of what he made and we wanted to make certain that the heart I was making was going to be for his big brother.<br />
<br />
Being that we were at the pond, we even had a visitor. Nolan said to me "I wish I were a frog so I could swim in this icky water and find all the treasures that are buried underneath."<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://tinypic.com/?ref=2pqopxw" target="_blank"><img alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic" border="0" src="http://i61.tinypic.com/2pqopxw.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
We used our heart pouches to then walk around the pond and collect treasures.. leaves, sticks, pinecones and the like.<br />
<br />
Our day ended with a couple of songs and a good-bye songs.<br />
<br />
My son was so happy about his day. I could tell because he had so much to tell my husband at dinner. He really enjoyed our one on one time and my undivided attention. It felt so good to be in that space and place with him. As much as I was trying to teach him, he was equally teaching me. I was learning about the calm of the day, the beauty of our surroundings and just how wonderful of a person this little being is. I am so honored to be his mama and get the opportunity to help teach him things! What a gift. Lorahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17723698149926748853noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-165367587170960419.post-51193163235746205812014-09-07T22:04:00.000-07:002014-09-07T22:04:01.993-07:00Weekly Lunch Menu Preview<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://tinypic.com/?ref=24ocdhy" target="_blank"><img alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic" border="0" src="http://i60.tinypic.com/24ocdhy.jpg" /></a> </div>
Well we made it through our first week of first grade! Granted it was only 3 days, but survived we did! My son was elated with his experience. His only complaints were "it was too short" and "we didn't do a lot of learning yet" By the third day he was doing handwork and attending his Mandarin class, so he was a little more pleased ;-) It's so fun to see him so eager to learn!<br />
<br />
I found the pre planning for food really made the week a whole lot less stressful for me. I was able to quickly prep his snacks and lunch and never found myself wondering what I was going to pack. It was also good for us in our breakfast and dinner preparations. This week I begin home schooling my 3 1/2 year old. We will be having a baking day in our week and I'm excited for our rhythm to begin.<br />
<br />
Today I prepped the beginning of our week. The whole process took an hour and a half. So, what's our plan for the week? Here you go:<br />
<br />

mixture into a medium sized bowl, and stir in strawberries. Divide
remaining 1/2 cup diced strawberries over the top of each muffin.<i> (This step is optional, but it really makes the strawberries burst with color and flavor on top of each muffin!)</i>

These are a delicious snack!!!! Oh yummy!<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>1 Can of Chickpeas (Garbanzo Beans). I soak our beans, this is roughly 1 1/2 cups of beans.</li>
<li class="spx_inspected_extr spx_global">2 Tablespoons Olive Oil</li>
<li class="spx_inspected_extr spx_global">1/4 Cup Grated Parmesan Cheese</li>
<li class="spx_inspected_extr spx_global">1 Teaspoon Garlic Salt</li>
<li class="spx_inspected_extr spx_global">1 Teaspoon Kosher Salt</li>
</ul>
<h3>
Instructions</h3>
<span style="font-weight: normal;">Preheat oven to 375 Degrees</span>. Drain and rinse your beans in a colander. Let them dry on paper towels until most of the excess moisture is absorbed. Spread the chickpeas out on a cookie greased cookie sheet. Roast the chickpeas in the oven for 45 minutes or until the beans are crunchy throughout. Remove from the oven and immediately toss with olive oil,
garlic salt, Kosher salt and parmesan cheese. These will last for a couple of days in an airtight container. <br />
<br />
<h3>
Kale Chips</h3>
My kids love kale chips and we have a ton bursting at the seams in the garden. Kale chips are very easy to make. Just take your kale, clean, line a sided pan with aluminum foil and bake at 325 for 30 minutes or until crispy. We add sea salt to ours. You can try other versions too. I have sprinkled with garlic powder and that was super yummy, yet a little spicy for the kiddos.<br />
<br />
We still have bread leftover from last week. I will add those to snacks in the beginning of the week, or just have a nice snack when my son returns home from school.<br />
<br />
And since I had the strawberries out, I decided to make some homemade ice cream for dessert. Tonight we had chocolate chip, raspberry and strawberry ice cream. The boys were so excited!<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://tinypic.com/?ref=2qnpc1w" target="_blank"><img alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic" border="0" src="http://i57.tinypic.com/2qnpc1w.jpg" /></a></div>
<h3>
<u><i>Lunch this week:</i></u></h3>
I will add carrots and other veggies to his lunch like last week. I find it to make things so much easier if everything is cut and ready to go for the week. Submerge in water and it's so easy to just take out slices for lunch prep. That said, I found out my husband likes his carrots whole "I like to eat my carrots whole" Who knew he had an opinion on his carrot size ;-)<br />
<br />
This week I really wanted to find a good salad recipe that was packed full of items in our garden. We have tons of zuchini, kale and swiss chard. I wanted it to translate for all of us.<br />
<br />

An easy way to pack some good veggies and protein into a school lunch is having leftover dinner. We will make a quiche this week and use this as a lunch option. I always make two quiche in order to eat one and freeze the other. <br />
<br />
<b>Ingredients</b><br />
2 pie crusts<br />
whatever vegetables you have on hand. This is one of those recipes where you can clear out your fridge and add it into a couple of meals.<br />
<br />
We have spinach, zucchini, beets, green beans and mushrooms (yep, we sneak them into the quiche ;-) 10 eggs (this is the pricey part of the meal). mozzarella cheese.<br />
<br />
<b>Instructions:</b><br />
preheat oven to 325 degrees. add crusts to oven for 5 minutes to cook a little before adding the ingredients. Add your vegetables to the frying pan and saute until vegetables are soft. Add eggs, vegetables and cheese and cook for 30 minutes. </div>
</div>
<br />
<h3>
Homemade pesto. </h3>
My sons will use this to dip veggies in and I will use to make pasta for their lunches or in a wrap.<br />

<b>Ingredients:</b><br />
<ul>
<li>3 cups of basil</li>
<li>2 cups of almonds</li>
<li>1 tbsp olive oil</li>
<li>3 garlic</li>
<li>1/2 cup of parmasean cheese</li>
<li>1 tbsp lemon juice</li>
</ul>
<br />
blend all ingredients in the food processor. I added water to get the desired consistency.<br />
<br />
<br />
This is our plan for the week thus far. I am sure we will add items here and there. I will be sure to share with you.<br />
<br />
Please add in the comments some of your favorite recipes for school lunches. Sharing is caring :) I would love to hear your thoughts on if you try any of these recipes! OK, I guess you can, but it is such a delightful way to spend a few hours. This summer a group of moms gathered our boys and headed out to our local strawberry/raspberry patch. The activity was great for a group of boys who were running around trying to fill their buckets to the very top.<br />
<br />
We picked at Antonio's Farm in Talent, Oregon.<br />

<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>Lunch (protein):</b></span><br />
1. Sliced veggies (carrots, broccoli, zuchini) and homemade hummus. I find it's always a good idea to precut your veggies for the week and then submerge them in water so they don't go back or wilt. A few weeks ago I made homemade hummus. I soaked the beans overnight and then cooked them the next day. I made a ton and then froze 8 bags worth. It was a cinch to grab a bag out of the freezer and make hummus today.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://tinypic.com/?ref=34sjvpk" target="_blank"><img alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic" border="0" src="http://i60.tinypic.com/34sjvpk.jpg" /></a></div>

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://tinypic.com/?ref=312bdye" target="_blank"><img alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic" border="0" src="http://i61.tinypic.com/312bdye.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
Today Nolan ventured to camp with his big brother (at Hudson's kindergarten school). It was a BIG day for me as I watched my youngest child find his comfort in a world that was unknown to him. He has been home with me since birth and we plan on him staying with me for at least another year if not two. As we walked out the door Hudson said to him "don't worry Nolly, I will take care of you."<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://tinypic.com/?ref=16a75ht" target="_blank"><img alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic" border="0" src="http://i57.tinypic.com/16a75ht.jpg" /></a></div>
And off we went. We arrived at the school and said our good-byes. A big hold and a hug and a greeting from one of his favorite big kids, Peter, and he was doing just fine. There were no tears, no big drama and when he returned home, here are his words on how his day went.<br />
<br />
"I had so much fun today" "it was a very long day" "you should have stayed closer because I wanted to hug you at times" "I'm excited to go back tomorrow" "I really have to go poop now because I waited" "I couldn't reach the soap to wash my hands" "Peter is my best friend"<br />
<br />
After we said our good byes and I drove down the long gravel road, my chest was tight and I thought of all the things that could go wrong. For the first couple of hours I anticipated the phone call telling me that Nolan was inconsolable and that I needed to return to school immediately (that is how things went when Hudson was first trying this stuff out). After the first hour I really started to relax and by hour four I was feeling pretty relaxed.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
So what did I do during these four hours? I sat! Yes! I sat! I first grabbed my coffee in my new coolest mug with an amazing sippy cup attachment from <a href="http://www.thegrommet.com/cuppow-to-go-lids-for-mason-jars" target="_blank">CUPPOW</a>. I feel so much better about getting coffee knowing that I am not using their disposable cups and this has the same feeling as using one of those (do you know that feeling? That disposable cup feeling? I love those cups! These are just as great!)<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://tinypic.com/?ref=mb3me0" target="_blank"><img alt="Image and video
hosting by TinyPic" border="0" src="http://i62.tinypic.com/mb3me0.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
After my coffee was in hand I headed to Lithia Park ( and did you know that <a href="http://www.dailytidings.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20140621/LIFE/406210301/-1/NEWS01" target="_blank">Lithia Park</a> was just voted 20th best park in the US?) and I found myself at the duck pond. I found a bench in the shade and I began relaxing. I see people there all the time spending hours just reading and staring at the water and trees. I have always wanted to be one of those people and here I was.<br />
<br />
The focus of my time alone was to do more self education. I am in the middle of the book <a href="http://steinerbooks.org/books/BookDetail.aspx?productID=322521" target="_blank">Under the Stars; The Foundations of Steiner Waldorf Early Childhood Education</a>. This book brings such a deeper understanding of Waldorf in the early years and it's perfect for my children's ages. I love finding deeper meaning into Steiner and his form of education. When I read his work and works about him, I find that I have a deeper connection to my children and a better understanding of them. I am also taking the time to work on my handwriting. I have recently taken to writing letters. The one thing I have noticed is that my arm will hurt very badly after writing one page. Falling victim of not really using my hands for handwriting, I am trying to restrengthen these muscles. I find such beauty in penmanship and getting thoughts of importance down on paper. I then can share these thoughts more clearly with Adrian and it finds a deeper rooting and placement in my brain.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://tinypic.com/?ref=5br7c" target="_blank"><img alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic" border="0" src="http://i57.tinypic.com/5br7c.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://tinypic.com/?ref=efrnnm" target="_blank"><img alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic" border="0" src="http://i58.tinypic.com/efrnnm.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
While sitting I was in awe of the beauty that came in and out of that space. I sat there from 9:30-11:30. I watched an array of dragonflies made there way to and from the same bush. I watch the red ones and blue and white ones do a very intricate dance around each other. I captured their beauty and saw their faces in a way I have never even imagined. They are quite magical. A turtle came to visit. I felt like we had a special bond this turtle and me because when I come here with Nolan, the turtle always peaks it's head up at Nolan. Nolan calls the turtle his "pet turtle." I like the think Nolan's turtle was there to keep me company. And he did. He would come out and sunbathe and as soon as someone would walk by he would pop back into the water, then make his way back out to his sunbathing spot.<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://tinypic.com/?ref=2uikkrk" target="_blank"><img alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic" border="0" src="http://i62.tinypic.com/2uikkrk.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">

<br />
A morning wouldn't be complete without some summer knitting. Summer knitting is my favorite. There is no winter in sight and no holidays to prepare for. It's just pure knitting for pleasure.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://tinypic.com/?ref=muygw9" target="_blank"><img alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic" border="0" src="http://i57.tinypic.com/muygw9.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Towards the end of my day I happened upon the plaza where the Palo Alto Chamber Orchestra was putting on a free show. Nothing like ending a glorious morning with some amazing music.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://tinypic.com/?ref=28ml54n" target="_blank"><img alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic" border="0" src="http://i60.tinypic.com/28ml54n.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Tomorrow they venture off together again. I have no plans to clean or run errands, but I do have many plans of self relaxation and reflection. I was so excited to start crafting for her! She is the most adorable baby and just sleeps and nuzzles and all that really amazing baby stuff.<br />
<br />
Here are a couple of pictures of what was made for Baby Abby:<br />
<br />
A knit coat with a tulle dress.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://tinypic.com/?ref=35a3whz" target="_blank"><img alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic" border="0" src="http://i61.tinypic.com/35a3whz.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<br />
And a little summer fancy dress! I was in heaven with getting to make girly clothes. As much as I try, my boys just don't wear dresses ;-)<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://tinypic.com/?ref=300vdde" target="_blank"><img alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic" border="0" src="http://i58.tinypic.com/300vdde.jpg" /></a></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I love making for friends and babies. There is something about how every stitch makes you think of them wearing it and growing into it. It's such a great thing to be a crafter! </div>

<a href="http://tinypic.com/?ref=35kj22b" target="_blank"><img alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic" border="0" src="http://i62.tinypic.com/35kj22b.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
There comes a time when we all set limits: how much to spend on something.. how far we will go... how much of "that" I can eat??? ETC.<br />
<br />
I love setting limits for myself and creating challenges for my own self. I've recently set a challenge not to go to Medford. Medford is the biggest "city" close to our small town. It's a fine "city" but it reminds me of a lot of things I don't want to indulge in.. mostly consumption. When we first moved to Ashland I told myself that I wouldn't go to Medford all that often. That I would do all my shopping locally and that lasted for a good 10 minutes. I really don't have much against Medford. I enjoy going to Target, to JoAnns, to Chipotle.. you name it.. I'm pretty much OK with it. I am, however, not OK with the effect it has on my pocket book and what I am teaching my kids.<br />
<br />
Medford to me and my kids means we are going to consume. I will make excuses on why I need to go to places like Target. I need toilet paper (got that in Ashland), I need cleaning supplies (got those in Ashland), I need something (probably got that in Ashland too). But I realized that when I would go, I would always leave with a few shirts for the boys, a new something for me, a little something for the house. I realized I was leaving with more than I had set out for. Then came my kids. They are good at not asking for much and I am good at not giving much. Toys were always off the list. We don't buy toys outside of Christmas and birthdays, but I started watching them lose it over getting a new shirt, or socks, or something. They felt entitled to getting "something." They<i> needed</i> it... But really they don't really need anything right now. I realized that I was setting them up for a need for material things, even if it was just something as simple as socks. And let's get real, this town of mine, was listed as one of the best small town's by Fodor's!<a href="http://www.fodors.com/news/photos/americas-best-small-towns#!1-intro" target="_blank">Ashland kicks Ass!</a> Shouldn't I keep my dollars in this town? Isn't that kind of my personal responsibility? <br />
<br />
It wasn't really how I wanted to raise my kids. I really want to raise them to appreciate the things that they have. I know that it's natural for kids to want things and at times have a need for things, but I also want to provide a good example. To find simple pleasures in things surrounding us. To not drive 40 minutes to consume when our town does provide us with the necessities that we need. <br />
<br />
Going beyond my kids, I realized how I was supplementing consuming with being bored. Instead of finding something that would fulfill me in a positive manner, I was finding ways to quickly release the dopamine in my brain from purchasing. So here I am, journeying into self control. Finding ways to set limits for myself and to reduce consumption. I feel that consumption is hard on us physically and mentally and I do want to tread lightly on the Earth. Even if it's a small step, I hope this is a bigger change for my family.<br />
<br />
Do you ever feel the need to set limits on consumption?<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://tinypic.com/?ref=2ufdp2e" target="_blank"><img alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic" border="0" src="http://i61.tinypic.com/2ufdp2e.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Yes! It's true. For Mother's Day last week, my husband stated "these bagels are the best bagels I've tasted since New York!" Now that's saying something, don't you think?<br />
<br />
So, here is your recipe. These are truly amazing! I made two batches at a time (I did not double the recipe, just simply made the recipe twice) and froze half.<br />
<br />
It comes from this book which I believe if you don't do gluten, this is like a baking bible for me.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://tinypic.com/?ref=32znxgx" target="_blank"><img alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic" border="0" src="http://i62.tinypic.com/32znxgx.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Seeded bagels<br />
Makes 10 bagels<br />
<br />
4 cups all purpose gluten free flour<br />
3 tsps xantham gum<br />
1 tbs salt<br />
1 tbs active dry yeast (proof first)<br />
6 tbs honey<br />
2-3 cups warm water<br />
2 tbs sugar<br />
1 extra large egg, beaten with water (for egg wash)<br />
<br />
Seeds: you can do whatever you like. I did:<br />
poppy seeds<br />
sesame seeds<br />
garlic salt<br />
pepper<br />
<br />
1. in a large bowl, place the flour, xantham gum, salt and yeast and whisk to combine. To the dry ingredients, add the honey and mix to distribute. It will clump up a bit.<br />
<br />
2. In a slow but steady stream, add the 2 cups water, mixing with a spoon as you pour. Mix until the dough starts to come together. If it's not coming together, add more water.<br />
The dough should be thick and sticky, but not impossible to handle. Divide the dough into 10 heaped portions, sprinkling each with flour and roll between your hands (I dusted my hands too). make a disc about 1 1/4 inches thick. Create a hole in the center of each disk.<br />
<br />
3. Place the mounds of dough 1 inch apart on a rimmed baking sheet lined with parchment paper and let rise for 30-45 minutes. Dough should rise about 1 1/2 times its original size. I find in Ashland this takes longer.<br />
<br />
4. Boil a big pot of water with the sugar. After the bagels have risen, gently place the mounds of dough into the boiling water, two at a time, for 3 minutes, rotating 1/2 way through.<br />
<br />
5. As they finish boiling, place each bagel back on the parchment paper about 1 inch apart. With a pastry brush, brush each bagel with egg wash and seeds of your choice. <br />
<br />
6. At this point, the bagels can be frozen or cooked. To bake, oven set at 375 degrees. Place bagels 1 inch apart and bake for 25 minutes or until golden brown.<br />
<br />
7. Allow bagels to cool at least 15 minutes before slicing open.<br />
<br />
8. ENJOY!! <br />

He was jet setting to Paris and Milan, going to fashion shows, sitting in the Armani show room. He was bringing home fancy little presents and I was one lucky and happy lady. I was on the top of my wedding career. Clients galore, designing, creating, implementing.. I was dining at private events, sipping bubbly amongst the top wedding planners. My business and weddings were in magazines from San Francisco to Manhattan.<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
We were consumed with things and feelings of self worth by the caliber of fabulousness we were achieving. We held the burdens of always wanting and needing more and working to death to achieve those things.<br />
<br />
Then one day...<br />
<br />
We became pregnant. Our lives started to shift. It was a gradual shift and we tried to keep our lives as similar as they were. My wedding business was the first to go. I knew that I didn't want or need that type of stress while pregnant and I didn't want to dedicate my life to my clients when I should be dedicating it to my baby. It was a sad day. I remember walking off the steps of San Francisco City Hall. Just completing a Peruvian wedding that was one of the highlights of my career. I had my Carrie Bradshaw moment where I walked away with one little last glance back of a life I was leaving and hearing my own words of "there comes a time in life when it's best to just walk away."<br />
<br />
Life shifted for us even more when my husband's job moved to Hong Kong. We were offered to move there and they were offering us the world. Amazing salary, housing, a live in nanny, schools, flights home 2 times a year, you name it, they were offering it. My husband said "why don't we do it for 3 years, make boat loads of money, and then move to Ashland." At this time I was pregnant with my second child. As I thought of my kids, I thought to myself that I just can't do this. Some days I look back and think that we were so foolish to walk away from that money, but then I look at what we have gained in the 3 years that we would have been there. It was here that I started to realize that money is not the root of all happiness.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://tinypic.com/?ref=6hnnzt" target="_blank"><img alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic" border="0" src="http://i61.tinypic.com/6hnnzt.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Our move to Ashland has brought us to our deepest root of simplicity. It is a lifestyle choice for us. We have chosen for me not to work while the kids are young. I haven't worked in 6 years. There are days that I panic and think that I have to get a job. But instead of losing that time with my young children, we shift. We shift from coffee out every day. We shift from taking vacations. We shift from money. We see their youngest years as a crucial point of their development. That they know that mom is always here. We know that one day I will work and for now it is about forming these bonds and strengthen our family relationships.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Gardening with kids</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://tinypic.com/?ref=10hluzd" target="_blank"><img alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic" border="0" src="http://i61.tinypic.com/10hluzd.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Simplicity for us was birthed from our first child. First it was the type of toys we had, then to getting rid of our television and mostly it stems from keeping our head on straight about newness. Our society is full of such glitz and glimmer. So many things come in white boxes that we think we must have. Just the other day I was at my mother in laws house and she was using her iPad for a recipe in the kitchen. I thought "god, I could really use an iPad. Wouldn't that be so great to be able to do this and that and this and that......" As I kept thinking about how great it would be to have this device, I stepped back and thought about all negatives. How much time I would probably spend on it. How many times I would tell my kids "just a second." and then how much another device would creep its way into my every day life. So many devices are consuming our time and energy.<br />
<br />
I recently read a facebook post about someone that wants to simplify. She posted a photo of the amount of remote controls she has to control all her devices and compared it to a simple remote that was used for her old TV. She was commenting on wanting to simplify. Many of her friends offered solutions on how to buy a universal remote control or the app for the iPad that would sync all her remotes together.. altogether missing the bigger picture. Maybe the solution is to just do away with all the things that require so many remotes.<br />
<br />
I wrote: "...Living with young kids in this day and age we have really evaluated our own lives and what it means to be happy and if those "things" really do us any good. We sold our TV a couple of years ago and it has been the best thing ever. It was a hard adjustment for about a month because we realized how much time we wasted watching television. Also with watching TV we were innundated with ads that told us all the other "things" we "needed" and that would bring us happiness. I see the world always connected and losing touch with what is going in our present lives. There is such beauty that surrounds simplicity. We have downsized our lives beyond belief byt when we see our lives now vs pre children, we see our relationships with others and ourselves become fuller and more genuine. To think we traveled down this road of simplicity to better our children and the way they were raised, we have in turn made our own lives better and more enriching. I believe all these devices and all this stuff just seems to leave us wanting more and being more unhappy.. and always looking for the remote."<br />
<br />
Simplicity.. such a simple word, but something that in our culture is being harder to achieve.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://tinypic.com/?ref=v3lzc1" target="_blank"><img alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic" border="0" src="http://i60.tinypic.com/v3lzc1.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And it's moments like these that make living simply and "without" more rich than anything</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://tinypic.com/?ref=28km1i0" target="_blank"><img alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic" border="0" src="http://i62.tinypic.com/28km1i0.jpg" /></a></div>

**this was typed on my 2004 iBook G4. For years I have said that we need a laptop. Even when this one works just fine, with a little more rainbow scrolling ;)**Lorahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17723698149926748853noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-165367587170960419.post-60747625233359664222014-04-13T20:04:00.000-07:002014-04-13T20:04:30.150-07:00CreatingOh there's been so much creating around here. To the point that I have officially burnt myself out. It's ok though, this always happens to me. I take a good two week break until I am back in business. I have orders that I am working on right now, but my personal items are taking a back burner....<br />
<br />
With that, here are a few things that have made their way out the door.<br />
<br />
Hudson's friend Evi celebrated her 6th birthday. I made her this sweet outfit.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://tinypic.com/?ref=dwvpr6" target="_blank"><img alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic" border="0" src="http://i58.tinypic.com/dwvpr6.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://tinypic.com/?ref=oir7ds" target="_blank"><img alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic" border="0" src="http://i62.tinypic.com/oir7ds.jpg" /></a> </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://tinypic.com/?ref=168y61y" target="_blank"><img alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic" border="0" src="http://i62.tinypic.com/168y61y.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Nolan's friend, Enzo, turned 3 and I thought a quilt would be nice. Boys are harder to make for... I am always up for making dresses, but the boys I can't ever seem to find the right thing in terms of clothing. I used a lot of my scrap fabric and came up with this..<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://tinypic.com/?ref=2aflb2f" target="_blank"><img alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic" border="0" src="http://i61.tinypic.com/2aflb2f.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://tinypic.com/?ref=21crree" target="_blank"><img alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic" border="0" src="http://i59.tinypic.com/21crree.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Hudson's friend, Oliver, turned 6 and Hudson really wanted to make him a raft.. he said "a raft, where Oliver and I can drift around." I pulled out my handy dandy needle felting and started to poke away. I am not a huge fan of needled felting, only because I don't think I am very good at it, but these two little rafting boys turned out pretty cute. The blonde is Hudson and the red head is Oliver. Hudson painted the raft and assembled it. It was a great project for him. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://tinypic.com/?ref=2u9o9lc" target="_blank"><img alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic" border="0" src="http://i62.tinypic.com/2u9o9lc.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
And this is what our guest bed typically looks like. It is only clear of crafting when someone says they are coming to stay. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://tinypic.com/?ref=18g1hh" target="_blank"><img alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic" border="0" src="http://i59.tinypic.com/18g1hh.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
But this turned into this: a sweet dress for my friend's daughter, Brielle, who just turned 2. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://tinypic.com/?ref=akzxo4" target="_blank"><img alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic" border="0" src="http://i61.tinypic.com/akzxo4.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://tinypic.com/?ref=al4t40" target="_blank"><img alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic" border="0" src="http://i57.tinypic.com/al4t40.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://tinypic.com/?ref=4v3e46" target="_blank"><img alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic" border="0" src="http://i61.tinypic.com/4v3e46.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And here are some other things. I have really been into upcycling lately. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Taking this: </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://tinypic.com/?ref=autxs4" target="_blank"><img alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic" border="0" src="http://i59.tinypic.com/autxs4.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
and making this:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://tinypic.com/?ref=ht6vyx" target="_blank"><img alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic" border="0" src="http://i62.tinypic.com/ht6vyx.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Taking these:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://tinypic.com/?ref=iveba1" target="_blank"><img alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic" border="0" src="http://i61.tinypic.com/iveba1.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://tinypic.com/?ref=28vabh1" target="_blank"><img alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic" border="0" src="http://i58.tinypic.com/28vabh1.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And making this adorable outfit:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://tinypic.com/?ref=rh4g47" target="_blank"><img alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic" border="0" src="http://i57.tinypic.com/rh4g47.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://tinypic.com/?ref=2po4iv4" target="_blank"><img alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic" border="0" src="http://i61.tinypic.com/2po4iv4.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And just a few more things:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://tinypic.com/?ref=2igm7o8" target="_blank"><img alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic" border="0" src="http://i61.tinypic.com/2igm7o8.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://tinypic.com/?ref=k3oyvb" target="_blank"><img alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic" border="0" src="http://i59.tinypic.com/k3oyvb.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://tinypic.com/?ref=xc18o" target="_blank"><img alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic" border="0" src="http://i61.tinypic.com/xc18o.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Seeing it all lined up, I can see why I am so burnt out. I am in the middle of a baby shower gift and can't wait to share. Do you find yourself getting burnt out on crafting? Breaks are a very good thing! </div>

<a href="http://tinypic.com/?ref=23mtz6o" target="_blank"><img alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic" border="0" src="http://i58.tinypic.com/23mtz6o.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I don't actually "home school" but I do my version of it. What does it entail? And why do I do this?<br />
<br />
I am a stay at home mom for a 5 and 3 year old. My oldest son is in kindergarten 4 days a week until 12:45. During that time, I like to make certain that my younger son is getting good quality time with me. This isn't always the case, and recently I've been disappointed in my being engaged enough, but I am back on track! My youngest son doesn't go to preschool and won't go to school until he is 4 1/2 (or so). I want to make certain that I am still enriching his life and offering him things that are happening at preschool.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://tinypic.com/?ref=34sseaw" target="_blank"><img alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic" border="0" src="http://i60.tinypic.com/34sseaw.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
How do I schedule the week?<br />
<br />
Every Sunday night I write my "lesson plan." This gives me a calendar glimpse of what the week has in store for us. Then I distinguish our days. Some days stay the same every week.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
For Example: </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Monday- Baking Day</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Tuesday- Painting Day</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Wednesday- Hiking Day</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Thursday- Puppetry Day</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Friday- Cleaning Day</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Within those days, I will add additional things that I would like to focus on.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
For Example: the alphabet with my youngest son and numbers and math with my older son. I always have more baking and cooking time then just on Monday. I also do things like laundry that I have my youngest separate all the laundry into piles by person. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I also write out my "circle time" plan for my youngest. After dropping my older child off at school, I head home and start our "school." We do about 20-30 minutes of circle. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
We start with this morning song: </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<strong>Good Morning </strong><br />
<br />
Good Morning Dear Earth (hands as if holding earth on abdomen)<br />
Good Morning Dear Sun (stretch arms above head in a circular arc)<br />
Good Morning Dear Trees (stretch arms to side, like tree branches)<br />
And the Flowers Everywhere (hands holding flowers on ground)<br />
Good Morning Dear Beasts (hands as if petting a dog,etc..)<br />
And the Birds in the Trees (hands “fly” away like birds flying away)<br />
Good Morning Dear You and Good Morning Dear Me. (hands reaching to each other, then hands cross over our chest)</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
We then continue with a morning verse and a story. This week we are reading the Sun Egg. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://tinypic.com/?ref=289etjl" target="_blank"><img alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic" border="0" src="http://i58.tinypic.com/289etjl.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
After our story we have a snack and start working on our baking day. I usually choose a bread to make so he is able to knead the bread. Some days I will do muffins or the like. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://tinypic.com/?ref=30n9raa" target="_blank"><img alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic" border="0" src="http://i57.tinypic.com/30n9raa.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://tinypic.com/?ref=b8n6s5" target="_blank"><img alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic" border="0" src="http://i58.tinypic.com/b8n6s5.jpg" /></a> </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: left;">
We then will take a walk around our neighborhood for some sunshine and outside time. This week we plan on spending time at our creek. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I tend to base my days on being outside. We enjoy nature walks and finding gems of places in our little town. Last week we were busy "fishing" in our pond (with a harmonica of course). </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://tinypic.com/?ref=2qcfdag" target="_blank"><img alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic" border="0" src="http://i62.tinypic.com/2qcfdag.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The one thing I have found by keeping a consistent rhythm is that my children thrive off of a rhythm and I do also. It's great to see them contribute to our family life and to see them learn in ways that are through every day ways. It's also nice to see them gain confidence in areas that I would some times just like to hurry through. It's a lesson in breathing for me! </div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Here are the books that I am using this week. I have loved all three of these for being guides into our rhythm:</div>

This week is all about hearts and love! I don't even like Valentine's day, but I find myself a little too excited about hearts and stuff. Maybe it's all those Valentine's we've been making, but more than likely it's all those pins on Pinterest. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Thinking of such wonderful hearts... my sweet boy has one of the biggest. Hudson has always been very open with his heart and his need and want to share his love with others. He thinks up wonderful gifts for his friends, he holds relationships very dear, and he has a great connection with his grandparents (and even great grandparents). My mother in law gave him this hat after her mother passed away. This was Great Grandma Betty's hat and my mother in law thought Hudson would like to have it. Hudson holds this hat as such a treasure and each morning he "gears up" for school and asks "Where's my grandma Betty hat?" I know that grandma Betty holds a special place in his heart and he feels her presence every day he puts this hat on. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://tinypic.com/?ref=2cdbghu" target="_blank"><img alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic" border="0" src="http://i58.tinypic.com/2cdbghu.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
This boy of mine is such a gem to be a parent of. He is both courageous and daring, yet loving and soft. He is strong and athletic, yet gentle and calm. He is your typical boy, yet not your typical boy. I love how he cares so much for other people. One example is that it's been a huge adjustment for him since I have cut out gluten. The other day, after we had been baking, he asked me to try what we were making. I told him that I couldn't try it because it had flour in it. I wasn't really thinking that would effect him and within seconds he had tears running down his face. He sobbed while telling me he was so sad that I wasn't able to have any of the treats we make. He told me that he would take care of me and that he and his daddy would make me gluten free cookies soon. Those moments, I just cherish him.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Hug your little ones and love their hearts! They are such joys. </div>

<br />
Hudson decided he wanted to make a pillow for his Valentine. He made a very sweet embroidered heart shaped pillow for her. There was so much thought and feeling that went into each stitch he made. He was so very excited to make this for her and of course his brother then wanted to do the same thing.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://tinypic.com/?ref=2m7vfqd" target="_blank"><img alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic" border="0" src="http://i58.tinypic.com/2m7vfqd.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I was reluctant at first to try embroidery with my three year old, but he loved it. With each stitch I would say "under" or "over" and it was great to see him get the concept of under and over. We did color selection and he learned how he couldn't just put the needle in anywhere he wanted. He also learned a great deal of patience when the thread would come off the needle. He was very excited to finish his project for his Valentine.<br />
<a href="http://tinypic.com/?ref=111ifys" target="_blank"><img alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic" border="0" src="http://i58.tinypic.com/111ifys.jpg" /></a><br />
<a href="http://tinypic.com/?ref=2lo0n6u" target="_blank"><img alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic" border="0" src="http://i61.tinypic.com/2lo0n6u.jpg" /></a><br />
<a href="http://tinypic.com/?ref=10gd15j" target="_blank"><img alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic" border="0" src="http://i60.tinypic.com/10gd15j.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
It's amazing when we take real life concepts and use those as methods for teaching. They both used their hands and put their hearts into their presents. They had such pride in their work and little did they know, they were learning concepts along the way.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://tinypic.com/?ref=231kbd" target="_blank"><img alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic" border="0" src="http://i59.tinypic.com/231kbd.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Beautiful!<br />

I've just the thing.<br />
<br />
Yesterday my boys decided they wanted to make "neon heart shirts!" They love neon! The brighter the better in their opinion. So, we rummaged around for some paints and bought a couple of shirts and got to work.<br />
<br />
(my youngest son made a shirt, but he did it while in his underwear.. I am not so cool with kids in underwear pictures).<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here are the needed supplies:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Shirt</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Fabric Paint</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Sponge paint brush</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Masking Tape</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Cardboard for under the shirt</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
First you make lines with the masking tape. The kiddos will paint the shirt between the lines.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://tinypic.com/?ref=23tfrmd" target="_blank"><img alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic" border="0" src="http://i58.tinypic.com/23tfrmd.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Next, grab your paints and let them paint away. Careful to make certain they don't paint over the sides and onto the table..</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://tinypic.com/?ref=2agkt4j" target="_blank"><img alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic" border="0" src="http://i59.tinypic.com/2agkt4j.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://tinypic.com/?ref=2e1yno7" target="_blank"><img alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic" border="0" src="http://i58.tinypic.com/2e1yno7.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
My kids wanted to alternate their colors</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://tinypic.com/?ref=264t07b" target="_blank"><img alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic" border="0" src="http://i61.tinypic.com/264t07b.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Once it dries, peel the tape back and see the cool lines</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://tinypic.com/?ref=315ea2t" target="_blank"><img alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic" border="0" src="http://i57.tinypic.com/315ea2t.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Now you can outline the heart and then paint inside the heart</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://tinypic.com/?ref=w7y7if" target="_blank"><img alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic" border="0" src="http://i59.tinypic.com/w7y7if.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
My son outlined his in black and then decided it looked "too perfect" and decided to graffiti it a bit</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://tinypic.com/?ref=2d9vac8" target="_blank"><img alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic" border="0" src="http://i57.tinypic.com/2d9vac8.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Ready for Valentine's Day!!!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://tinypic.com/?ref=294ot38" target="_blank"><img alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic" border="0" src="http://i62.tinypic.com/294ot38.jpg" /></a></div>

<a href="http://tinypic.com/?ref=1zh2otv" target="_blank"><img alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic" border="0" src="http://i61.tinypic.com/1zh2otv.jpg" /></a> </div>
<br />
It's amazing how one day you look and your second child and he is already Three. Someone told me, awhile back, that the second child is so different than the first. In so many ways, but mostly in the fact that you really can't dedicate as much time to that one child. I thought I would be different.<br />
<br />
Disclaimer: I know I do a lot with my kids, but some times I look at Nolan and feel like I just don't give him enough, and some times I really feel like I am failing him. <br />
<br />
Nolan, either by nature or default, is a very independent child. I think I have fallen for this fact that I just don't have to interact with him as much as I did Hudson (a very NOT independent child). While I was working this past semester, it would be painful to even pull out the paints. It seemed like a chore even though it was something so easy. I found myself spending a lot of time at coffee houses and running meaningless errands. I thought that the four hours we had alone together could be used for cleaning house, doing chores, but not too much interacting. It really didn't hit me until I stopped working and I've been available to my kids all day. I didn't realize how little I was putting forth for my second child.<br />
<br />
Having one child is (ahem) pretty easy to motivate. It's you and this one being. I was wiping out projects left and right. We were baking, hiking, exploring, etc. It was new and I was new to the Stay at home mom gig. When they napped, you could get stuff done. You actually had a good 2-3 hours to yourself. That's when a lot of those chores were done. Fast forward to your second child and you want all those things, but you ask yourself, "do I really want to paint again today?" "do we really need to go hiking, it's raining outside?" I've realized I have become that mom. Always putting so much effort into my first child, but not nearly enough into my second.<br />
<br />
But, the one thing I can do, is change.<br />
<br />
I am so happy to be spending so much more quality time with my little guy. His face lights up when I sit down to play with him. To spend more time engaging in things and not spending as much time focusing on the things for just me. I watch as I start welcoming him to help me with things, at first he doesn't have any motivation to help, but then he starts to open up to it. I know it's because I haven't included him in so many of my daily tasks.<br />
<br />
Nolan loves to bake, and now that's a part of our weekly rhythm:<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://tinypic.com/?ref=254yb95" target="_blank"><img alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic" border="0" src="http://i58.tinypic.com/254yb95.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://tinypic.com/?ref=23h36dl" target="_blank"><img alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic" border="0" src="http://i58.tinypic.com/23h36dl.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
And paint: </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://tinypic.com/?ref=11rptw5" target="_blank"><img alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic" border="0" src="http://i58.tinypic.com/11rptw5.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
We are not sending Nolan to preschool next year, and it's my responsibility to meet him at his developmental stages. I am so excited to have our little nook of preschool homeschooling. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Because before we know it, he will be going on 6 and heading to first grade like his big brother. His time is now, OUR time is now. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://tinypic.com/?ref=fa7imv" target="_blank"><img alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic" border="0" src="http://i59.tinypic.com/fa7imv.jpg" /></a></div>

<a href="http://tinypic.com/?ref=33wpfro" target="_blank"><img alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic" border="0" src="http://i43.tinypic.com/33wpfro.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
There's been an ongoing joke with people I meet these days. It goes like this:</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Insert any Siskiyou School Event</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Person: "So what grade is your child in?"</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Me: "I don't actually have a child here at the school, but will next year."</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This is usually followed by a blank stare and then the "and why do you volunteer so much?"</div>
<br />
It's a good question because I am volunteering a lot of time and energy to the school and people see me around a lot. This evening was the Siskiyou School's Annual All School meeting. I was there working with the Hospitality Committee. A committee that I was very excited to be a part of. I basically help set up the food and wine, make sure everything is taken care of in that department, and that people are generally happy. The meeting was very insightful to know the ins and outs of what is happening with the school and I witnessed something so incredibly beautiful. We heard from teachers who have been with the school since the days of it's fruition. To hear them speak of their trials and tribulations and to see where the school has been led, made me so happy to be a part of such an incredible group. To see the dedication that those teachers put forth to make certain that the school continued. Their sweat and tears and perseverance to make certain that my son was able to have a chance at such an amazing education. It is that core group that I hold with such reverence! <br />
<br />
My real love for the school came when I signed up for an auction item last year. I signed up for a painting class with Christine Crawley. This class transformed me. I am not sure what it was about the class, but something enbodied more than just the actual class. I remember a distinct feeling when Christine was teaching us how to do wet on wet painting, a feeling so profound as I watched the paints fall onto my paper, to start to blend in a harmounious way. The feeling of a group of us together, standing as one, and painting. In a world rather hurried, it was a moment of a teacher passing on her wisdom to her adult students. Listening to Christine direct us and watching my pictures come to life brought me to a place of wanting more. Wanting to bring this to my own children. To look forward to how I can have this feeling all the time. That painting hangs on my wall and everyday I pass it and am reminded of that feeling of the beginning towards something so much bigger than myself. I will always be thankful for Christine's class.<br />
<br />
I am there for more than just the volunteering. I am there for the community. I am there for the "feeling." This year I started working at the Siskiyou School as their aftercare provider. It has been such a change for me to hold the children for that hour in a time when they have ended their day. To keep them grounded for a little more time and to bring them together in peace. I have watched them grow and transform over the past few months. They have grown taller, they have grown in their being, but they have also grown in their inner selves. The kids have such great compassion and love. They have taught me so much and next week my position ends as the kids start to go the full day. I have many moments of heavy heart when I think of not seeing those kids every day. To not witness their growing personalities, to listen to their extensive chatter. They will never know what a deep impact they all had on me, but I walk away with such a feeling of happiness and fullness. <br />
<br />
Oh the wonderful things I have gained. I have walked in the doors of the school and have witnessed the beauty of what makes the Siskiyou School. I see a staff so well put together and a community of families that are dedicating themselves to the greater good of the school. I walk past beautiful artwork displayed on the walls by the students. I walk past the music room and hear the harmonious voices of students. This week the students have been singing Jack Johnson's song "Better Together" and I can't help but smile and think, we are.. "Better Together." The majority of my work has taken place in the kitchen as I prepare for the kids after school snack. The kitchen is one of the greatest meeting spots and a place where I have connected with most of the faculty. I have been met with such gratitude and such warmth. <br />
<br />
So, no, I do not have a kid at the school. But what I do have is passion! I have such passion for the school and what is happening there. I have passion for Waldorf education. I have passion for learning more. I am blessed to have a beautiful friend that sets me in place to be able to volunteer so much. She has transformed my life more than she will ever know. My dear friend, Katie, such beauty and greatness. Such a blessing that she has shared so much with me. <br />
<br />
It is with such heart that I continue to learn and seek more knowledge on how to better myself and my experiences. I do that with the people I surround myself with and these people are making such profound impacts. Community.. such the root of feeling connected. <br />
<br />

<a href="http://tinypic.com/?ref=kbvzev" target="_blank"><img alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic" border="0" src="http://i44.tinypic.com/kbvzev.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
Today I was talking to a mom and she said " I would love to have your confidence and ability to put myself out there." We were talking about my recent media presentation. I chuckled a bit, because she has no idea how I lack in confidence in this department.<br />
<br />
Last week I geared up for a Media Presentation. It comes as no huge shocker that I am not keen on any media for children (especially young children). Last year I presented my class project on the topic and my teacher said I needed to "take it to the masses." I gave a smile, that uncomfortable chuckle, and thought to myself "Hell No!"<br />
<br />
You see. I don't have a ton of confidence to put myself out there. I just really, Really, REALLY, think people need to have more information on this topic. I really think that our media culture is moving WAY too fast for adults, let alone children. So, I chant to myself:<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
"You Can Do It!"</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
"You Can Do It!" </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
"You Can Do It!"</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
And last week I did do it. I arrived at a local preschool where I set up my materials, looked at an audience of parents and even grand parents. And then.. I wondered to myself... "What am I doing here?" It's funny that I sometimes don't see myself as a successful woman in her 30's (ahem! I did run a very successful wedding planning business in San Francisco), but I see myself as my 16 year old self. Not worthy of presenting to people. But, then it dawns on me, these people are hear because they TOO really care to hear about the Effects of Screen Media and Children.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Then... I can breathe.. and start to speak. And once I start to speak.. it rolls.. like a child rolling down a big grassy hill. It rolls! and I find myself in my element. I find myself confident and excited. My passion for children, Waldorf, life.. it can be seen through my words and I enter into my being and I greet it with a warm embrace. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
My presentation was a success. A good balance of science, stats and personal experiences. I was so happy to open this email from one of the parents: </div>

<i>"Hi Lora,<br /></i></div>
<i>You
did such a wonderful job on your talk! First of all, and perhaps most
importantly, the content is so important and well thought out. Your
delivery was very well done with a great mix of anecdote as well as
scientific references. Your message touched me deeply and reinforces
some of the choices I have made about screens and refocuses me on areas I
could do much better at (those iphones are terrible!). Anyway I just
wanted to share my support of what you are doing. It is a difficult
message to give because it makes all of us parents question the choices
we are making and highlights where we are falling short and that can
make people defensive. Good for you, it is a message that must be heard
and awareness must be brought to this.</i>

<div style="text-align: left;">
<i>Thank you!"</i></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Like so many other people on this planet, I did make a "diet resolution" this year. It came at the recommendation from my doctor. He believes that gluten and caffeine are a source for a lot of the digestive problems I have. I have been suffering from horrible stomach pains for years and he said cutting these two things out of my diet would warrant profound changes. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
IT'S NOT EASY!</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I have currently switched to only decaf coffee, but I do have hopes of eliminating it all together. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Gluten is YUMMY! </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Let's be honest. There is no real substitute for gluten. Even though they try, the gluten free stuff just isn't that great. My hope is that it starts tasting better with time. For now though, I am trying my hand at just natural whole foods and keeping grains somewhat limited. Smoothies have been a key part of my new diet. I take a bunch of kale and spinach and add fruit.. blend away.. and eat. It's very filling and doesn't leave me feeling the constant need to snack. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Heather, over at Beauty That Moves, blogged a yummy breakfast recipe <a href="http://beautythatmoves.typepad.com/beauty_that_moves/2013/02/the-pancake-bowl-and-banana-oat-blender-pancakes-recipe.html" target="_blank">Banana Blender pancakes</a> </div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
These pancakes were really moist and fluffy. I couldn't believe how easy they were to make and kids devoured them **Without Syrup!**</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The other shift has been for lunch. I am currently enjoying bean chicken soups and lettuce wraps. They make for easy, no fuss lunches. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Snacking is easy. A handful of almonds or other nuts. Carrots. Celery with peanut butter. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I have really enjoyed not finishing my children's snacks. Although, also the hardest! Leftover scone? Nope! Leftover tortilla? Nope! My waistline will thank me for this shift for sure! </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
It's a life change for sure, but I am also very excited about it. Yes! In just 10 days I have felt so much better. I haven't had any stomach bloating or feelings of getting sick. It's so nice to be listening to my body and deciding to take the necessary changes now. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
When going Gluten Free, understand that you still have to read the ingredients. Gluten Free products still have lots of sugars and ingredients that break down into sugar. Just because it's Gluten Free, doesn't mean it's healthy! </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Let me know if you have any great recipes to share. </div>

It's such a great feeling to clear out the living room after such an epic explosion happens, don't you agree? Every year I make my boys something. Last year I made them quilts, this year I made them Waldorf dolls and Ergos. My boys are ages (almost) 3 and 5 1/2. I thought it was the perfect time to make these dolls for them because they would know to be gentle with them. Let's be honest, these dolls take HOURS to make. I also hand made their clothing, so add even more hours to the equation.<br />

<br />
They were both elated when they opened the boxes Christmas morning. Hugs happened and names were given. Hudon's doll: Stripey, Nolan's: Elf.<br />
<br />
Naturally!<br />
<br />
The night before Christmas my husband said "don't be disappointed if the boys don't play with their dolls, you just never know." And I had no expectations. Actually, I expected for them to lay on the floor and then be picked up, by me, and then I would have to find them a new home just like I did with all the other toys. I was completely fine with that. But the opposite has happened. The boys LOVE these dolls. I think a lot of their Love comes from the fact that I made them. They are elated when I make them things and are so sweet about it. But it actually goes a bit further. They actually really love them. They change their clothes at bedtime, they give them random kisses, my wonderful mother bought Nolan a stroller and they stroll them around.. They actually take care of them. Except for the first 10 minutes after opening the doll, Nolan took an orange marker to "her" head. Luckily I have a spot remover that works magic!<br />
<br />
Here comes the interesting bit about this topic. Some people actually have a hard time digesting boys and dolls. Call me crazy but I just don't get it. I believe it is important to teach our kids about how to be with babies and how to care for them. The hope is that one day they will be father's of their own and will have to actually take care of a baby. The fact that we distinguish that a doll is a "girls" toy speaks volumes about our culture and our perception what is the woman's role and the man's. I, however, don't see it this way and luckily, my husband doesn't either. My husband has spent hours carrying our children, feeding them, strollering them, etc. I do know that children like to imitate their parents, and I see my boys and their dolls and they are imitating the good men/fathers that we have in this world. <br />

It will be reassuring to me when boys can stop imitating these guys:<br />
